Subject: Talk: Research relevance in LIS
Dear all
Dr Kirsty Williamson has been a researcher in library and information
studies for a long time. She says: "I certainly am an enthusiast and
have lots of fun [with research] at least a lot of the time". Kirsty is
coming to Perth to work on one of her projects and has agreed to speak
to the profession about some of her work.
Information studies @ Curtin, in partnership with the State Library of
Western Australia and ALIAwest, invites you to hear from Kirsty
ON: Thursday 12th April, 2007
FROM: 5.30. p.m. to say 7p.m.
IN: The Great Southern Room, 4th Floor, State Library of Western
Australia, Alexander Library Building, James Street Perth.
Topics will include:
1. The information needs and behaviours of older people. More recent
research is on 'the role of information and communication in successful
ageing, with a focus on the oldest old',
2. The impact of the retirement of the baby boomers on the public
library. This is funded by Upper Murray Regional Library, Public
Libraries Australia and The State Library of NSW. We undertook a pilot
study in 2005 and this year will be conducting an Australia-wide study
to include baby boomers, key library managers and potential managers
from generations X and Y, and high flying community gatekeepers, e.g.,
Hugh McKay if we can persuade him to take part.
3. Generating knowledge and avoiding plagiarism: Smart information use
by secondary students. This is an ARC Linkage project involving four
secondary schools.
4. The role of information in online investment. This is an ARC
Discovery project which aims to establish whether there is need for
further legal regulation of online investment.
Please RSVP to me for the talk so that we can make sure we have room for
you - there is no charge. Please also let me know if you would like to
join us for a meal afterwards as I may have to make a restaurant
booking.
Regards
Kerry
