Subject: [Aus-archivists] Employment opportunity - Indigenous Cadetship
inArchives

Cadetship in Archives
Archives and Records Management Services The University of Sydney
Archives and Records Management Services (ARMS) is currently offering an
exciting Archives Cadetship to an Indigenous student. The Cadet will
contribute to the work of the University Archives including the
provision of archival support to the research project called "Elder
Assessments of Early Material Culture Collections from Arnhem Land and
Contemporary Access Needs to Them among Their Source Communities" which
is funded externally by the Australian Research Council (ARC). This
unique project aims to assess historic records from Arnhem Land of world
heritage significance held in the University Archives and is led by the
ARC Indigenous Research Fellow, Joseph Neparrnga Gumbula.
In learning to manage and digitise original materials, you will receive
close guidance and support from ARMS staff and affiliated researchers.
The Cadetship provides an excellent opportunity to enter a career in
archives and/or research, and learn invaluable skills in managing
Indigenous records, archival techniques and database use. Applicants
must be motivated and flexible with an interest in pursuing a career in
archives and/or research. A willingness to learn exciting new skills as
part of an expert team of archivists and researchers is also essential.
You will contribute to the preparation of research findings for
dissemination through academic writings, conferences and reference
meetings with Indigenous communities, have opportunities for
professional development and build extensive professional networks. As
such, it is essential that you are confident and eager to be involved,
and a strong communicator who can interact with a diverse range of
people including University staff, external research partners and
Indigenous community stakeholders.
Open exclusively to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students of
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent, the Cadetship involves
seven hours of work per week for two to three years, and two week-long
blocks during semester breaks each year. As a learning opportunity in
addition to your current studies, this position is part-time and
fixed-term for up to three years depending on the year of studies
completed. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is
a condition of employment for new appointees.
Apply now to participate in the unique work of ARMS with Indigenous
researchers and communities, and kick-start a fulfilling academic career
within Australia's most prestigious University. Online electronic
applications are preferred. To apply online, please visit
http://positions.usyd.edu.au and search for reference number 96821. For
more information about the role or to receive assistance with your
application, please contact Shona Kennedy on 02 9036 9268 or email:
s.kennedy at eeo.usyd.edu.au
Remuneration package: 70% of $57,161-$64,050 p.a. pro rata and according
to skill level (which includes a base salary Level 5 $48,302-$54,123
p.a. pro rata, leave loading and up to 17% employer's contribution to
superannuation) plus an additional study allowance.
The University of Sydney works in partnership with the National
Indigenous Cadetship Project and the Department of Employment and
Workplace Relations (DEWR).
