Subject: [WAIN] New graduates and mentoring

Hello everyone,

Need some GuMPtion? Got some to share?

You're invited to a meeting on Wednesday 12 December, 6 pm at State Library café to brainstorm mentoring and new grad activities for 2008.

Everyone is welcome - whether as student or new graduate interested in meeting other new or not-so-new graduates; or as seasoned professionals interested in volunteering your ideas and advice.

The resume and job interview sessions held earlier this year were the most popular events held, but other ideas are also sought.

Being the extreme social season, if you can't make it to the meeting, but would like to contribute or participate in the future, we'd love to hear from you. We welcome any comments or ideas for our meeting, so please email them to me.

If you can attend, please rsvp to me so that we can look out for you.

Kind regards,

Linda Papa

What is GuMP?

The Graduate Mentoring Program is an ALIA WA Mentoring Group initiative, designed to help graduates with the transition process in to the library profession.

Facilitated on a volunteer basis by committed librarians from a variety of library sectors, GuMP offers new librarians a nurturing and informative platform to discuss issues relating to entering the profession and continuing professional development.

It also provides a great opportunity to network with librarians from a wide range of experience and expertise, and of course to maintain those wonderful contacts established at Library School!

GuMP's program is determined by the needs and interests of participants.
Topics that have been covered in the past have included:
a.. How to find that job
  b.. Curriculum Vitaes
  c.. Selection criteria
d.. Interviews (incorporating the professional wardrobe)
e.. Types of libraries: real life in the workforce (panel discussion)
f.. Supervising, management skills, styles and issues, self management
g.. Continuing Professional Development and ALIA
  h.. Managing electronic resources
  i.. Career planning
  j.. Web page design/management
k.. Introduction to ABS, AusStats and C-LIB

You can subscribe to GuMP's e-list "aliaGUMPWA" hosted on ALIA's website http://lists.alia.org.au/mailman/listinfo/aliaGUMPWA and be informed about forthcoming meetings.
