Dear students

Information studies has booked a small bus to make the journey there and
back for the New Norcia Library Lecture for which the details are below.

The bus will leave Curtin University Bus Station on Hayman Road, Bentley
(see map: http://www.properties.curtin.edu.au/your_campus/maps/

at 7.30 a.m. and return to campus at around 6 p.m. There are no pick
ups on the way - it is too complicated. The cost of the round trip is
$10 per passenger - payable on the day. Remember that if you are
attending the New Norcia lecture event, there is an additional cost and
you need to fill out the form and let NEW NORCIA know that you are
coming.

Please let ME know by email if you will be coming on the bus. I have
heard from some of you and will send out a confirmation email to those
who have advised me, closer to the day.

Thanks

Kerry

Dear all

This is a lovely outing and I would particularly encourage our
international students to attend so that they can see a little of the WA
countryside on the way up and back. NB There is a special student
price. You are fed very well as the fee includes morning and afternoon
tea and lunch.

We normally do our best not to have classes on this day as staff usually
attend - in fact I have to be there - see below.

Once again, you are invited to be part of the New Norcia Library
Lecture on Friday September 7. The day promises to be informative ,
entertaining, and better still, inspiring, because all our speakers
talk positively about libraries in the future.

The key speaker is ANNE-MARIE SCHWIRTLICH, the C.E.O. of the State
Library of Victoria which has embarked on an ambitious strategy called
slv21. The aim is to get information quickly and directly to people as
and when they want it, through increased online services and digital
access to collections, and an expanded gateway to the global information
world. Hew topic is
SLV21 - building a library of the 21st century for Victoria.

The afternoon speakers are equally interesting. I have asked Kerry Smith
from the Dept of Information, Curtin University to talk on the broad
value of I.F.L.A. Is it just an excuse to attend overseas conferences,
or does it have international clout? Peter Green, Associate Director of
Resources and Access at Curtin University Library and also the moderator
of the WAIN email discussion list will talk about the implications of
technology on libraries in the future. Vicki Tkacz, the Co-ordinator of
the Catholic Library of W.A., has developed a positive response to the
continued existence of the small special library, under threat in so
many places.

This is affordable, and informative professional development. For the
same moderate fee as the last three years - $66 for adults, and $30 for
students - you will hear excellent speakers, have an opportunity to
contribute to the discussion session, be able to network with colleagues
from across the whole library spectrum, enjoy a delicious morning tea
and buffet lunch, and have free entry to the museum/art gallery.

Morning tea is at 10 am and the day finishes at 3 pm so that you can be
back in Perth by 5 pm. Registration and prepayment are essential to
facilitate catering. Please RSVP the form below by August 31 to
library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au <mailto:library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au> or by
mail to Sue Johnson, New Norcia Library, New Norcia, WA 6509. You can
pay by credit card, cheque or postal order. Receipts will be provided on
the day; tax invoices are provided on request. Contact me on email or at
9654 8060 Wednesdays to Fridays for further details.
