Dear Students
This email is for those students who will be enrolling or have enrolled
in a prac unit in semester 2, 2007 and thus will be doing their prac in
the mid-semester break. This is normally June/July 2007. Your practicum
application forms need to be with me as soon as possible.
I have taken over the job as prac coordinator from Kerry Smith and my
contact details are below. The prac manual and some forms still indicate
Kerry as the contact person, this is being changed but unfortunately the
person who updates our web pages is away this week. Please refer all
prac queries to me at the address below and NOT to Kerry.
The practicum application form, insurance form, practicum manual and
other prac-related documents can be found at:
http://info.mediainfo.curtin.edu.au/is_practicum_students.cfm
You need to complete the relevant practicum application form AND the
signed insurance form; then email, post or fax BOTH forms to me as soon
as possible.
Please read the following steps and work out which one applies to you:
1. The relevant practicum units are:
Information Studies 102 - Information Environment - 2 weeks full time
placement;
Information Studies 302/502 - Information Theory & Research - 3 weeks
full time placement.
If you wish to apply for an exemption from the prac placement on work
experience grounds, then you must enrol in the unit anyway as there are
other coursework requirements to complete. You will need to send me as
the Practicum Coordinator, a formal and comprehensive application for
exemption outlining your case. This process is detailed in the practicum
manual.
2. There are some students enrolled in the coursework masters (Master of
Information Management) who are undertaking the dual qualification in
librarianship and records management/archives. These students need to
undertake TWO placements: one in a library and the other in
records/archives. One placement is attached to Inf Theory & Research 502
- mentioned above; the other is attached to another unit in which you
are enrolled at the time of the second placement. These students need to
also make application for either their first or second prac placement,
stating CLEARLY which one it is and in which area
(library/records-archives).
3. There may still be some students enrolled in one of the two Graduate
Diploma courses who should have done a prac placement by now but have
not, and still need to do one. They will have already completed Inf
Studies 502 when it was Information Behaviour and had no prac attached
to it. Please let me know if you are such a person and in which units
you are enrolled in semester 2, 2007. You must get your prac tidied away
before you graduate.
4. Anyone else who does not come under the conditions mentioned above
and still thinks they need to do a prac placement. Email me your case.
Regards
Glenn
