<p class="Default"><b><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Abstract</span></b><span style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">: Vanuatu is a hybrid state in which constitutional democracy is based on indigenous custom. The tension between modern negotiation
techniques and approaches grounded in traditional authority permeates society. This talk will describe a partnership of the National Council of Chiefs of Vanuatu, the University of Queensland and AUSAID to improve conflict resolution at the different levels
of society. Our method involved working with local community leaders and facilitators to run “storians” on governance, community development and conflict resolution on the different islands. Some lessons about the importance of culture, language and gender
that emerged from the storians will be drawn out. </span></p>
