Public Forum - All Welcome

In Australia, more than 50 people who have been recognised as refugees remain in detention due to assessments by ASIO that they are a security threat. These people have no access to the information used to make the assessments - known as "adverse assessments"
- and no right to have the assessments reviewed. They are in a legal limbo that could stretch on indefinitely.

To mark Refugee Week 2013, join us as three experts in the field look at why this situation is allowed to exist, what effect it has on the people subject to adverse assessments, and how it can be fixed.

Speakers

Matthew Albert is a Melbourne barrister who has represented a number of refugees and asylum seekers in the federal courts, including Manokala and Ragavan Jenaddharsan who recently became the first refugees released from detention following
an adverse ASIO assessment. Matthew is currently representing another refugee who is subject to an adverse ASIO assessment. For 18 months prior to joining the Victorian Bar, Matthew worked with Geoffrey Robertson QC in London. He has also worked with the Victorian
Government Solicitors Office, the Solicitor-General for Victoria and Justice Habersberger of the Victorian Supreme Court (as an associate).

Jane Dixon SC is the President of Liberty Victoria, one of Australia's leading civil liberties organisations. Jane has practiced at the Victorian Bar for over 20 years. Ms. Dixon is Chair of the Pro Bono Committee of the Victorian Bar and
is a longstanding member of the Indigenous Lawyers Committee of the Victorian Bar. She is a past recipient of a Women's Lawyers Achievement Award and a Victorian Bar Pro Bono Scheme award. She is a member of the Criminal Bar Association and the Common Law
Bar association.

Dr Patrick Emerton is a Senior Lecturer in the Monash Faculty of Law and an Associate of the Castan Centre. He specialises in legal and moral philosophy, international law and human rights theory. He is also an expert on Australia's anti-terrorism
and national security laws, and has appeared as an expert witness in front of parliamentary committees on terrorism-related issues, has spoken regularly in the media, and has worked for many years with the Federation of Community Legal Centres Anti-Terrorism
