Presenter: Dr Jan Browne, Department of Human Services (Victoria)
Venue: VicHealth Seminar Room, Ground Floor, 15-31 Pelham St, Carlton South

Effective and ethically sound practices are required when we are engaging with participants in all research and evaluation. However, when the participants of research and evaluation are vulnerable, researchers and evaluators need to consider their circumstances
when developing appropriate research and evaluation methods.

In this seminar, Jan will outline some practice tips for engaging with vulnerable people in research and evaluation. Throughout the seminar, she will draw on some examples from recent internal evaluations undertaken by the Department of Human Services and external
evaluations to illustrate how the specific needs of vulnerable people can be included in effective and ethical research and evaluations.

Presenter: Dr Jan Browne is the Senior Research and Policy Officer at the Centre for Human Services Research and Evaluation at the Department of Human Services. Jan is an experienced qualitative researcher, specialising in designing qualitative
studies and collecting and analysing people's personal experiences in a way that seeks social justice. Among others, her research projects have involved exploring sexual wellbeing; community engagement in palliative care; work/personal boundaries in home care
services for people living with disability: discrimination and living with Hepatitis C; staying well with manic depression / bipolar disorder; and talking about dying with community members. Jan has published extensively in refereed journals and various books.
