will explore the articulation of identity within the Australian state. Dr. John
Goldlust (La Trobe University) will begin the discussion by presenting a
socio-historical interpretation of 'Australian identity'. Exploring who defines
it and the uses it serves Dr. Goldlust will offer us 'a few thoughts and a
considerable amount of speculation' around the slippery concept of 'Australian
identity' - past, present and future. </span></font><font color=black><span
style='color:black'><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:black'>Dr. Jean-Paul
Baldacchino (Victoria University) will present an ethnographic study of the
importance of ritual in the articulation of 'migrant' and 'Australian'
identity'. Examining the Maltese religious ritual of the 'festa' at home and
abroad Dr. Baldacchino explores the limits of the secularist ideology that
regulates the multicultural public sphere in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on"><u1:place u2:st="on"><u1:country-region u2:st="on">Australia</st1:place></st1:country-region></u1:country-region></u1:place>.
By examining the fate of the 'festa' Dr. Baldacchino argues that the 'social
pouissance' that enlivens identity is doomed to the mortification of Culture in
the repressive tolerance of the public sphere.</span></font><font color=black><span
style='color:black'><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
