have a long history to which community psychology has contributed. This special
issue seeks to further add to this body of evidence which is practice-based,

introduce <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Communities for Children, </span></i>a
large scale initiative for communities funded by the Australian Federal
Government. This scheme aims to improve the outcomes for children and families
in areas identified as ‘disadvantaged’ by developing and implementing
local strategies for children aged 0 to 5 years, their families and the
community, through participation and collaboration <i><span style='font-style:
italic'>with</span></i> the community. The Broadmeadows <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Communities for Children</span></i> site forms a
small geographic corner of the City of Hume in the North West of Melbourne. The
area has long been subject to significant economic disadvantage and
demonstrates associated vulnerabilities. Broadmeadows and surrounding suburbs
constitute a vibrant multicultural centre with many strong, well-established community
groups that are articulate, skilled and active in working for and with their
communities.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
