to improve health systems by using research evidence to inform decision making,
recognising it as a critical investment. In the words of Dr Hassan Mshinda,
from the Ifakara Health Research Development Centre in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region
w:st="on">Tanzania</st1:country-region></st1:place>, ‘If you are poor
actually you need more evidence than if you were rich.’ <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=2 face=Arial><span

some of the key health research discoveries of the 20<sup>th</sup> century.
Secondly, she will examine the role of health in economic and social development
and current initiatives in research for improving health policy
internationally. Finally, she will look at examples of health policy informed
by research and strategies to facilitate the use of research and evidence to
