Convenor of the APS Interest Group for Psychology and Homelessness

APS INTEREST GROUP FOR PSYCHOLOGY AND HOMELESSNESS WEBINAR: Friday 24 March, 1:00pm.

Dr Kathryn Taylor, Clinical Psychologist, Interest Group Committee member and former convenor, who is working in private practice and also teaching at the University of Sydney, has just completed a PhD in Health Sciences (Public Health)! She will be presenting her PhD research: “Trauma Involving Violation of Trust, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Mental Health Help Seeking: A Journey to Social Inclusion for Adults Experiencing Chronic Homelessness in Australia”

The thesis included three studies that drew on data collected for the Journey to Social Inclusion Phase 2 randomised controlled trial, which compared a novel homelessness intervention developed by Sacred Heart Mission with standard care. The research generates new knowledge on the traumatic experiences and mental health needs of adults with a history of chronic homelessness in Melbourne. The findings have implications for homelessness services, mental health services, and public policy. Future research is needed to develop treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders that are effective for people experiencing homelessness and for those who obtain housing.
