Psychologists for Peace Interest Group (APS) are proud to host a 1.5 hour webinar, which will involve three speakers discussing their research pertaining to reducing racism and inequality in Australia.

Each presenter will present their research, followed by 5 minutes of Q and A, so please have your questions ready.



Profiles



Speaker 1: Emily Haines (2022 winner of the Research Award)

“Their Win is Our Loss”: Examining Whether Framing Utopian Thinking and Collective Narcissism Influences Support for Racial Equality.

Emily Haines has a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from Flinders University, South Australia and is currently working as a research assistant for Professor Emma Thomas at Flinders University. Emily is hoping to do a PhD next year and to follow her passion of contributing to a better world through research on social change.


Speaker 2: Kimberley Bates (2021 winner of the Research Award)

"Examining elements of police practice in fostering more trusting, peaceful, and harmonious relationships with immigrant victims of crime."

Kimberley is a Counsellor and Provisional Psychologist at Centacare North Queensland who specialises in trauma-informed practice and attachment-based therapies. Kimberley holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science and Criminology and Criminal Justice at Griffith University. Kimberley is an alumna of the New Colombo Plan Scholarship where she became a Humanitarian Affairs Asia Peace Ambassador for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Kimberley received the Global Youth Icon award at the UNCC in Bangkok and the University Medal for Outstanding Academic Excellence in the Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours).


Speaker 3: Clare Wilson

"Understandings and Applications of Self-Compassion and Self-Coldness among Hazaras in Australia: A Qualitative Study"

Clare (she/her) is an early-career psychologist and academic at the Cairnmillar Institute, Melbourne, Australia. She is nearing submission of her Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) thesis which explored the mental health and wellbeing of Hazara asylum seekers and refugees resettled in Australia. Clare’s thesis has been supervised by A/Prof RoseAnne Misajon and Dr Joanne Brooker at the Cairnmillar Institute.
