Hello all

Research about the experiences of Irish LGBTI people and family members during and as a result of the 'No marriage equality' campaign in Ireland might be of current interest and use, or at least god to know, given that a 'No' campaign in Australia is getting into swing, and will increase as the date gets closer to the government's planned postal plebiscite/vote/survey on marriage. The research found that young LGBTI people, and the children of LGBTI people, were particularly negatively impacted.

For those who don't know, the vote/survey papers are due to be sent to all (not that all can be reached) Australians on September 12th - although 2 challenges aiming to prevent that will be heard in the High Court on 5th and 6th of September, and may be successful. The Coalition's plan to hold an at-the-ballot-box national and vote on whether Australians prefer, or not, that our marriage law restrict marriage to couples comprised of one man and one woman has been twice blocked by the Senate (October 2016 and last week), and the postal version was announced last week following the second block by the Senate.

Not surprisingly, and as as numerous organisations and experts warned would occur if the Coalition government were to set up a nation-wide 'debate' and vote on marriage, mental health and related services are reporting a greatly increased number of people being distressed and seeking assistance and support.

Here is the link to the report, and attached above is a brief summary of the main findings (summary is a press release from October 2016):

There is a current call and opportunity to assist at Switchboard in Melbourne. They apparently have many people volunteering, but are in particular need of more people who are already trained in providing psychological support: See here for details if you are interested:
