Subject: Survey on the proposed Gender Incongruence of Childhood Diagnosis for the ICD-11

Dear all

Please see the information below, this is the research we discussed at TRIG yesterday. Please forward to all appropriate health professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical or counselling psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, mental health nurses and social workers), we need to reach as many health professionals as possible.

Survey on the proposed Gender Incongruence of Childhood Diagnosis for the ICD-11

  * Do you work or have you recently worked in a mental health professional role in Australia?

  * Do you think the new ICD-11 should contain a diagnostic category for transgender children below the age of puberty?

Have your say! It would be great to hear your thoughts on this topic. All you have to do it complete a brief online survey (link towards the end of this email).

Sharing your voice could influence health policy on a global level and make a positive difference to the health and well-being of transgender children ....

Below is some additional information about the study for your consideration.

Background and purpose of the research...

My name is Claire and I am currently conducting research investigating Australian mental health professional's views on the World Health Organisation's (WHO) proposed inclusion of a Gender Incongruence of Childhood (GIC) diagnosis (used for children below the age of puberty) in the forthcoming International Classification of Diseases diagnostic manual - Version 11 (ICD-11). Revisions of the current ICD-10 are underway and the revised ICD-11 is due for approval in 2018.

Why your participation is so important...

Partaking in this research is your important opportunity to influence the final decisions made on the whether the GIC diagnosis is included or excluded for transgender children below the age of puberty in new ICD -11. Your contributions could improve access to the gender affirming health services which support transgender children who have healthcare needs.

This research will contribute towards a thesis for my Master of Counselling Psychology degree at Curtin University, and has ethics approval from Curtin HREC (approval number: RDHS-62-16).

Who can do it?

The survey is directed at mental health professionals (i.e. psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical or counselling psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, mental health nurses and social workers), who have recently (i.e. last 3 years) or are currently working in Australia and are 18+.

So what do I have to do?

If you are interested in participating, the online survey should take you approximately 15 minutes, after reading the information sheet at the beginning of the survey.

To access the online survey and information sheet, please use the following link: https://curtin.au1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_9YnF6Yp5POvwtcp

Please also visit and share the research Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GICdebate2016/

It would also be appreciated if you could please share/ forward this email with the above message and survey link to your personal and professional networks, websites and/or social media to ensure it reaches as many mental health professionals as possible!

Your time and support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for participating and/or sharing this important survey.
