Speaker: Carmel O'Brien, Counselling Psychologist

APDT is very privileged to be able to offer a presentation by Carmel O’Brien, who is well known in the field of work with survivors of Domestic Violence. Carmel is a Counselling Psychologist.  After initially working in the rehabilitation sector, shehas spent the last 23 years working with individuals and families who have experienced trauma, violence and related issues, as well in general counselling.  Carmel has worked in the Child Protection system, the Victorian Women’s Prison and as a relationship and family counsellor.  Carmel was for fourteen years the Director of Clinical services at a Melbourne welfare agency, managing a large Counselling Program and developing a suite of domestic violence support programs for women and children.  Carmel is a Fellow of both the Australian Psychological Society and the Cairnmillar Institute.  She has a small private practice and is currently writing a book about recovery from domestic violence. 

Workshop description: 

This workshop will be a very valuable education in issues regarding the treatment of women who have been subjected to violence. Carmel will include interactive exercises and group activities, so that the workshop qualifies as Active PD. Participants in the workshop will go home with knowledge which will aid them in their therapeutic practice.
