Mental Healthcare Professionals Working with Transgender People: A Workshop

Flinders City Campus, Adelaide, June 25th 2015, 10.30AM - 5PM

At present in Australia an increasing number of transgender people are seeking clinical services, including for assessment to access hormone therapy and/or surgery, for psychological support, and for family and relationship support in terms of building networks of care. This one-day workshop aims to provide mental healthcare professionals with an understanding of some of the specific skills required to work clinically with transgender people.

Drawing together clinicians from across a range of mental health professions, this workshop aims to demonstrate the importance of an interdisciplinary approach, particularly given current legal and clinical requirements that may often be unclear to the generalist practitioner. The workshop both draws upon currently available practice wisdom – including that held by attendees – in addition to outlining the latest research and practice knowledge from specialists in the field.

By its conclusion, attendees will be able to understand the impact of social norms upon transgender people (and how such norms may, even if unintentionally, shape clinical responses), identify pathways to care for transgender people, understand some of the specific skills required for working with transgender people and their support networks, and demonstrate a holistic understanding of mental healthcare as it pertains to transgender people.

The workshop is aimed at a generalist audience of mental healthcare professionals who may or may not have previously worked with or otherwise been connected with transgender people. The workshop is convened by the national executive of the Gay and Lesbian Issues and Psychology Interest Group of the Australian Psychological Society. Discounted rates for APS members, though the workshop is open to all mental healthcare professionals.
