Lessons for Australia from the early childhood policy achievements of the Nordic European nations

This presentation will outline how Sweden and other Nordic nations achieve high workforce participation rates for women, and comprehensive, quality and affordable early childhood education and care (ECEC).  It will identify how Australia can also achieve these if the nation now considers and properly develops policies for extensive, publicly-provided ECEC, and for a proper balance between work and family life.  The economic as well as the social benefits for Australia of changing course and learning from the Nordic approach to investing in children will be outlined in detail.

Dr Andrew Scott is author of Northern Lights: The Positive Policy Example of Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway which has just been published by Monash University Publishing. He is the author of four previous books and numerous book chapters and articles on aspects of politics, policy and history, frequently involving international comparisons. For several years Andrew has been researching English-speaking nations’ past interest in – and lessons they can learn from – the policy achievements of the Nordic European nations.
