The University of East London has responded to the refugee crisis currently=
gripping Europe by committing to offer ten postgraduate scholarships to Sy=
rian refugees. The scholarships will cover all academic fees.

The move comes after the UK Government announced it would allow 20,000 Syri=
an refugees to settle in the country over the next five years.

Tens of thousands of Syrian men, women and children have been desperately m=
aking their way to Europe this summer to escape war and persecution in thei=
r homeland.

Charities and local authorities have been quick to respond to the escalatin=
g crisis. In east London, the London Borough of Newham Council has already =
announced it will provide accommodation for ten Syrian families.

As a leading centre for the study of forced migration and refugees, the Uni=
versity of East London is offering the new arrivals the opportunity to buil=
d a successful future in the UK by studying free of charge for a postgradua=
te degree.

=E2=80=9CNo-one could fail to be moved by the plight of these desperate peo=
ple,=E2=80=9D said UEL=E2=80=99s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Joughin. =
=E2=80=9CThis University is passionate about migration issues so this crisi=
s goes to the very core of who we are.

=E2=80=9CWe are ideally placed to help. East London has a long and proud hi=
story as a place of settlement for refugees and is now one of the ethnicall=
y diverse areas in the capital. This is mirrored in our University, where w=
e welcome students from more than 120 countries.=E2=80=9D

The University of East London is home to the Refugee Council Archive =E2=80=
=93 one of the largest collection of materials about the study of forced mi=
gration and refugees. It also conducts internationally acclaimed research a=
t its Centre of Research on Migration, Refugees
and Belonging, based in the School of Social Sciences.
Professor Joughin said he hoped the scheme would provide stability for the =
new arrivals and the chance to pursue their academic ambitions in a safe, t=
olerant and supportive environment.
=E2=80=9CThese people have endured considerable trauma,=E2=80=9D said Profe=
ssor Joughin. =E2=80=9COur hope is that these scholarships will give some o=
f them the chance to realise their potential and flourish in the future.=E2=
