Full time Postgraduate Psychology Research Student Bursary start date - October 2014

The studentship will have a bursary of £13,726 per annum (pro-rata as a monthly payment) plus UK/EU Fees paid for a period of three years.

If you are an enthusiastic high achieving student looking to undertake a PhD in a vibrant research environment, then join us by applying for a full time bursary available within our School of Social, Psychological and Communication Sciences.

The focus of the PhD will be qualitative research on masculinities and body image issues, and we invite proposals of up to 1000 words in this area. The successful applicant will undertake their research under the supervision of Professor Brendan Gough in the Psychology group (http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/research/brendan-gough.htm?type=lightbox) and will join the Centre for Applied Social Research (CeASR - http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/research/centre-for-applied-social-research-ceasr.htm).

The successful students will be expected to contribute toward the development of the research culture in the Centre and therefore a regular presence in the University will be required.

Criteria for Selection

Candidates proposals for the bursary will be judged against the following criteria:

· Academic merit of the proposal;

· Fit with the research agenda of the Institute/Centre;

· Potential to meet stakeholder needs;

· Capacity of the candidate to execute the project based on their skills, qualifications and experience.

· Length of Studentship

· Each studentship is for a period of 3 years full time study subject to satisfactory confirmation of registration and annual progress.

Start date and Induction

The start date of the studentship is October 2014. Successful candidates will have to attend a compulsory induction at the beginning of October (Friday to Sunday) here at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Overseas’ Applicants

If you are a prospective student from outside of the UK and EU and wish to apply to study at Leeds Metropolitan University you would be required to make up the difference, annually (£7672) between the UK/EU fees to be paid by the University of £3828 and overseas’ fees of £11,500. The fee difference will have to be paid prior to starting and overseas applicants are advised to refer to the UKBA regulations on studying in the UK by clicking here.

Part of the Research Culture

We expect bursary students to be an integral part of the research culture of the university, contributing to seminars and conferences, perhaps to projects, and generally engaging in the exchange of ideas. Associated with this, all research students undertake a research training programme.

Opportunity for teaching experience

All PhD students will be expected to take advantage of the opportunity to engage with some teaching experiences in an area of their expertise. The maximum amount of teaching related activity that a student could be expected to undertake is 6 hours per teaching week for each semester. Teaching related activity would include preparation of teaching materials, delivery of seminars, practical, tutorials and lectures as appropriate to the expertise and experience of the student.

Entry Qualifications for Admission

Applicants for registration for a research award will be expected to hold a good first degree and for professional doctorates, relevant professional experience. For entry requirements for individual research award degrees, please refer to the Research Regulations.

English Language Qualification
If your first language is not English, the University will require evidence that you have the necessary language skills to fulfill the requirements of the award. You will need to provide evidence of a minimum International English Language Testing System Grade 6.5 (IELTS 6.5) with no individual sub-score below 6.0 or equivalent for all research awards.
