Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century has provoked a global debate about rising inequality and what to do about it.

In Australia, inequality is on the rise, particularly in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. Welfare groups and community leaders are now warning Australia’s wealth and opportunity gap will only worsen due to big welfare cuts announced in the Federal Budget.

The University of Melbourne, in association with Australian Book Review, is hosting a public forum on Piketty’s ground-breaking work and what is shaping up as a defining political and economic issue for the next decade. Come along and hear the views of leading thinkers on growing inequality and its political and economic impacts, as well as have as your say.

Speakers include:

  * Professor Ross Garnaut AO - Professorial Fellow in Economics at the University of Melbourne
  * Dr Mark Triffitt - lecturer in public policy at the Melbourne School of Government
  * Dr Helen Szoke - Chief Executive, Oxfam

The forum will be moderated by University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glyn Davis.
