Hi everyone,

Colleagues of mine are researching public perceptions of the WA Government’s child sex offender registry website. They set up an anonymous online questionnaire. Participants are asked to rate their agreement to a variety of statements about the rights of the public to know about sex offenders and the rights of the offenders themselves. Currently there is a low response rate so if you can, please consider completing the questionnaire, available at:

https://www.communityprotection.wa.gov.au/

Background:
The controversial Community Protection Website was launched in October 2012 and allows members of the public to access information about certain serious sex offenders and to request information on the identity of other serious child sex offenders living in their area.

The website is the first of its kind in Australia and one of only a handful of public sex offender registries around the world. It generated global interest and significant debate on its effectiveness when introduced.

The study is the first to attempt to quantify the effectiveness of the website from the point of view of the community it is meant to serve and those who have viewed or sourced information from the website.

Kind regards,
Lauren
