Dear colleagues


In response to some informal discussions with several APS members who work in the gambling research and policy and/or problem gambling services areas, I’m writing to seek your support AND SIGNATURE for a proposal to form an APS Interest Group on Gambling and Psychology.



I have attached some draft Terms of Reference for the group, as well as a formal signature form to express support for the formation of this new Interest Group.


We see this proposal as a logical follow-on from the APS Position Statement on Gambling-related Harm (http://www.psychology.org.au/Assets/Files/APS-Gambling-Related-Harm-Position-Statement.pdf), the Literature Review on the Psychology of Gambling as well as a number of recent submissions to which some of you contributed (http://www.psychology.org.au/Content.aspx?ID=5218).

To get an Interest Group up and running, there needs to be sufficient support within the APS membership. In the first instance, this needs to be demonstrated by the completion of (at least) 20 signature forms from APS members around the country (Full Members, Fellows or Honorary Fellows from more than one State). For further information about Interest Groups, including the process for formation of a new group you can go to the Interest Groups Home Page (http://www.groups.psychology.org.au/igs/).

Please also forward this request to any other APS members you think would like to be involved and support the establishment of such a group.


The APS looks forward to receiving your signed form. If you have any comments about the proposal, the draft terms of reference, or other aspects of the APS’s Public Interest initiatives regarding gambling-related harm please feel free to contact me directly. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone willing to take on a leadership role in the establishment of this Interest Group, should the proposal be successful.
