Cultural diversity can create significant challenges in communities, including conflict, race and
culture-based discrimination and reduced social cohesion. Schools are one environment
in which both the benefits and challenges of cultural diversity are experienced, and dealt
with, on a daily basis. This session will focus on recent research in Victorian primary schools in economically disadvantaged areas exploring ways of developing intercultural understanding, and
encouraging socially just approaches to diversity.
The Enhancing Relationships in School Communities (ERIS) project, founded by Psychologists for Peace, is an initiative supporting schools to develop these processes and exploring schools’ experiences in these areas. Five standpoints on cultural diversity will be described including how these standpoints have been used to help schools to expand their views of approaching diversity beyond a ‘tourism’ approach to one that is truly transformative. Positive approaches to cultural diversity currently being applied in schools will also be discussed, based on parent, teacher and
student focus groups with culturally diverse schools.
The research is a collaboration of the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University with
support from Uniting Care Sunshine and Broadmeadows
