CALL FOR PAPERS
Beyond 'empowerment': New directions for community health psychology in the 21st century

A special issue of the Journal of Health Psychology

Guest editors: Catherine Campbell & Flora Cornish

Abstract submission deadline: 30 April 2012
First draft papers: 15 December 2012

The second decade of the 21st century presents new intellectual and practical contexts for analysis and action in the fields of community health psychology and community mobilisation. New and increasingly complex forms of social inequality arising from re-alignments in global power and wealth, as well as new forms of individualism, marketisation and technocratic approaches to health, present novel challenges for those seeking to tackle health inequalities and support marginalised communities. However contemporary forms of globalisation, technology and communication also open up new and exciting opportunities for local and global resistance and change.

In the face of these challenges, the field of community health psychology remains mired in 20th century conceptualisations of empowerment/disempowerment, participation/exclusion, advantage/disadvantage, and oppression/resistance, which are increasingly regarded as blunt tools for programmes seeking to build the capacity of marginalised communities - in the context of new forms of oppression, but also new arenas of possibility. This special issue is intended to advance theoretical development in community health psychology to yield new ways of thinking and acting in the interests of advancing community health and tackling health inequalities in the 21st century.

Aims of the special issue:

&#61623 To re-energise the field of community health psychology by advancing novel and actionable theories and concepts

&#61623 To develop a community health paradigm suited to contemporary societal conditions such as globalisation, economic austerity, individualisation, etc

&#61623 To move debates in the field forward, beyond traditional dichotomies such as powerful-powerless, or structure-agency, towards action-focused understandings of people-in-context

&#61623 To invigorate health psychology as a whole by highlighting contributions of a community health psychology perspective to the ambitions of health psychology

Papers are invited which advance theory and method for an actionable community health psychology in the 21st century. Papers should be ambitious in their scope, wherever possible presenting concepts, methods and practices which work across a variety of health issues and geographical domains. Case studies of novel forms of practice will be welcome on the condition that they are contextualised and presented as exemplars of new ideas, applicable in a range of domains.

Submission process:

A 2-round process of review will take place. Please submit abstracts by 30 April 2012 to Catherine Campbell (c.campbell at lse.ac.uk<mailto:c.campbell at lse.ac.uk>) also copied to Flora Cornish (f.cornish at lse.ac.uk<mailto:f.cornish at lse.ac.uk>). Selected papers will be invited to be submitted by 15 December 2012, to be peer reviewed through the usual process as operated by the Journal of Health Psychology. For further information, contact Catherine Campbell or Flora Cornish.
