A big thank you to everyone who came along to our film fundraiser last night, and especially to Bec Hogea, aka commpsychstudents at gmail.com<mailto:commpsychstudents at gmail.com> and the rest of the CP team who did so much work to organise it. The film itself is a must-see - be prepared to be disturbed and challenged.

We raised about $200 for the bio-toilet project in Mongolia, and received the lovely message below from our Mongolian Connection, Zola, who was able to be there in person to tell us about the project:

Morning Bec,

Thank you so much for organising the fund raiser. It means a lot to our community and the organisation. Our community will be stunned to hear the news because they have no idea about the fund raiser. As you know, indigenous people always lack the opportunity but they have great enthusiasm, and work hard to improve their living condition. Beautiful heart, beautiful people.

Indeed last night's movie was sad, and touching. I guess, we live in a very cruel world where people discriminate each other based on race, origin, gender, sexual orientation, social status, religion, and so on...
I believe if we all contribute to our society we can make a change. Little contribution is never little.

Once again my big appreciation for your heart and mind for organising such a beautiful evening. It surely made my trip to Australia more worthwhile;-)

Keep in touch

Zola

And there you have it.

Film Fundraiser! The Tall Man - updated notice - BOOKINGS DUE MON 14 NOV

The Victorian College of Community Psychologists invites you to a film fundraiser to support a Mongolian community bio-toilet project. Last year’s recipient of the APS Grant for Intercultural &/or International Projects, Doug Scott and the grant-funded guest Ms. Khongorzul (Zola) Amarsannaa from the National Centre for Human Rights and Development and the National Centre Against Violence in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, will provide an update on the bio-toilet project and how this fundraiser can assist.

Come along to help raise funds and see a challenging new Australian film…

Based on the book by Chloe Harper, The Tall Man chronicles the events surrounding the death in custody case of Cameron Doomadgee at the Palm Island police station in Queensland. In 2004, Doomadgee was arrested for drunkenness. Forty-five minutes later he was dead and his injuries were likened to someone who had suffered a fatal car crash, while police claimed he had tripped on a step. This gritty, compelling documentary follows the trial of the Senior Sergeant involved (Chris Hurley) as well as the Doomadgee family as they struggle to understand exactly what happened on that fatal evening (Cinema Nova).
