The International Journal of Intercultural Relations is putting out a Call for Papers for a Special Issue on Multiculturalism.

The culture and population makeup of people living in Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Canada and among islands in the Pacific Ocean have undergone tremendous changes over the last two decades.  A tectonic shift in demography has been driven by the transnational movement of immigrants, refugees, expatriates and international students, and been supported by the evolving societal norms and values regulating intercultural engagement.    The wars in the gulf states, the fight against terrorism, and  global financial uncertainties in recent times have caused changes in the geo-political climates and public opinions toward multiculturalism. Moreover, the notion of Multiculturalism has been constructed differently depending on the social context and the type of ethno-cultural groups in examination. These include pluralistic attitudes within a society or a country, strategic policies, and/or as psychological ways for individuals and groups to relate to
 each other.   The IJIR SI on multiculturalism aims to address  issues such as these.

We invite proposals on papers for publication in this Special Issue on Multiculturalism.
We plan to publish papers of two kinds:
1. Integrative papers that focus on key conceptual issues from an Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, African, Canadian or Pacific perspective. These might include: the social construction of multiculturalism; its relationship to immigration (including push and pull factors); the brain drain of talent; public and private attitudes on multiculturalism (including discrimination); and the role of security and threat.

2.Empirical papers that focus on research findings on these issues among the different regions of the world. These might include or contain subsets of (but not be restricted to): South Asia; East Asia; Southeast Asia; the Middle East; the Pacific, Latin America, Africa, and Canada.

The Editors encourage regional or multi-country articles, but will also consider single country studies that break new ground, or an innovative global synthesis.

Proposals should be submitted by prospective authors, by January 31, 2012.
Proposals should include a Title, and an Abstract of 500 words.
These proposals will be reviewed by the Issue Coordinators and the Editor of IJIR.
Once a proposal is approved, the author will be encouraged to prepare a manuscript of between 6000 and 9000 words.

These manuscripts will then be peer-reviewed, following the IJIR review process.
The expected publication date is mid-2013.

Please note that the IJIR special issue excludes Europe and the United States. The European Psychologist is now calling for papers on multiculturalism.  Contact John Berry (berryj at kos.net), and  David Sam (David.Sam at psysp.uib.no) for details.  Plans for a special issue on multiculturalism in the United States are under development at a third journal.
