COMMUNITY ACTION on Saturday 2nd April 1pm.
GET CHILDREN OUT OF DETENTION & CLOSE BROADMEADOWS DETENTION CENTRE
The Refugee Action Collective is organizing a community action in Broadmead=
ows calling for asylum seeker children to be released from detention. We ar=
e opposed to mandatory detention for anyone but especially for children. Th=
ere are more than 140 young unaccompanied asylum seekers between the ages o=
f 13-18 kept under guard in a detention centre at Broadmeadows (Melbourne I=
mmigration Transit Accommodation). Most people, including Broadmeadows resi=
dents, do not know anything about this detention centre.
The Refugee Action Collective is calling for this centre to be closed down =
and for the young asylum seekers=92 to be supported in the community while =
their refugee claims are being assessed.
We have decided to highlight this issue by organizing a peaceful protest ma=
rch from the corner of Camp Road and Sydney Road, Broadmeadows to the Camp =
Road entrance of the detention centre where we will hold a symbolic action.=
On the advice of key refugee advocates, we will not be marching right up t=
o the gates of the detention centre itself, as we are mindful of not jeopar=
dizing the asylum claims of the young people inside.
We would like to involve as many community groups as possible, especially f=
rom the northern suburbs. We especially hope to involve groups of high scho=
ol students in the symbolic action as they are the same age as the young as=
ylum seekers in detention.
