OCCASIONAL GUEST LECTURE
SPONSORED BY THE ASSOC DEAN (RRT) IN THE FACULTY AEHD
EXPOSING INJUSTICE THROUGH ETHNOGRAPHY: CHRISTMAS ISLAND ASYLUM SEEKER RESEARCH
PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR LINDA BRISKMAN
The presentation discusses methodological and ethical issues arising from conducting research on what has become known as a 'detention island'. It highlights issues of what to do with 'informal' data gathered as participant observers and how to balance the need to expose human rights violations with expectations associated with more conventional research paradigms.
Professor Linda Briskman is the Dr Haruhisa Handa Chair of Human Rights Education at Curtin University in Perth. Her main fields of practice, policy and research endeavour are Indigenous rights and asylum seeker rights. Recent books include 'Social work with Indigenous Peoples' (2007) and the co-authored 'Human Rights Overboard: Seeking asylum in Australia' with Susie Latham and Chris Goddard, which won the 2008 Australian Human Rights Commission award for literature. Linda has conducted three research visits to Christmas Island and is investigating how immigration detention and excision impact on the rights of both Christmas Islanders and asylum seekers.
