Dear all,

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the Tampa.

If you happen to be in Melbourne over the next month, you may be interested in the 'Just Like Us' exhibition, an exhibition which pays tribute to the courage and resilience of people who have sought resettlement in Australia, and to the great many individuals, community groups, advocates and organisations who have welcomed them since the Tampa incident. The exhibition will bring together film, photographs and objects and incorporate interactive and experiential elements, with materials and presentations sourced from people with refugee experiences and various Victorian based organizations and groups which support refugees. The exhibition runs from 26 August until 30 September, and includes an online exhibition (for those not in Melbourne).

The APS Public Interest team has organised a short (20 minute presentation/tour) of the exhibition, which you are welcome to join.....

When: Tuesday 30th August, 12.30pm short presentation/tour

Where: The Multicultural Hub, 506 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne (opposite Queen Victoria Market).

RSVP: To Emma Sampson e.sampson at psychology.org.au<mailto:e.sampson at psychology.org.au> so we know possible numbers.

About the Tampa Incident
In 2001, the then government was facing defeat. The Norwegian flagged ship MV Tampa rescued 439 Afghan asylum seekers from international waters near Australia. Heavily armed troops were placed on a boat and the Tampa was prevented from approaching Australia by the then Prime Minister Howard. This results in a diplomatic dispute between Australia, Norway, and Indonesia and global media coverage. The asylum seekers were eventually loaded onto a Royal Australian Navy vessel. Most were transported to Nauru and held in two detention camps as part of what became known as the 'Pacific Solution'. The Tampa incident has come to symbolise the deep divisions of opinion within our community about our proper response to those who seek asylum on our shores. The Captain of the Tampa, Arne Rinnan, along with the crew and owners of the MV Tampa, were later awarded the Nansen Refugee Award "for demonstrating courage and a unique degree of commitment to refugee protection.

For those not in Melbourne, perhaps check out what is happening in your state, or consider organising your own event!

Regards,

Emma
