"Experiences and perceptions following the Gordon Inquiry in WA"
Monday 2 May at 6.30pm
Dr. Sue Gordon has worked in a range of setting, including 20 years as the first Aboriginal Magistrate in WA's Children's Court. In 1947, aged 4 years, she was taken from her mother under Government policies relating to part-Aboriginal children. She grew up in Sister Kate's Home in Queens Park WA. In 2001, she became the Chairperson of the Sister Kate's Children 1934 to 1953 Aboriginal Corporation. In 2002 she chaired the Inquiry into the Response by Government Agencies to Complaints of Family Violence and Child Abuse in Aboriginal Communities in WA, known as the Gordon Inquiry. In 2007 she was appointed Chairperson of Prime Minister Howard's Northern Territory Emergency Response Taskforce. She has a Bachelor in Law and several Honorary Doctorates from WA universities in recognition of her work with Aboriginal people, complemented with several prestigious medals including the Order of Australia. She frequently speaks on the well-being of Aboriginal families.
At this seminar Dr. Gordon will talk about her experiences and perceptions of Aboriginal family well-being since she chaired the Gordon Inquiry almost 10 years ago. A 'must-attend' seminar for anybody with in interest in the Aboriginal peoples of Australia.
