CONTEXT:
The Social Justice and Social Change Research Centre is a University
Research Centre, situated within the College of Arts, Bankstown Campus.
The Social Justice and Social Change Research Centre (SJSC) focuses on
multi-disciplinary, theoretical and applied research on social justice
issues and processes of social change. The Centre is distinctive in the
diverse nature of its research projects. It emerged from the recognition
of research synergies of individual scholars and research groups in the
School of Social Sciences. The SJSC is committed to developing
collaborative partnerships with individuals, agencies and institutions
for whom social justice is a crucial issue. Centre members research
within a value framework that emphasizes Participation, Inclusion and
Equity.
The Mental Health Association NSW Inc, is the lead agency for this
project in collaboration with the SJSC, the NSW Consumer Advisory Group
- Mental Health and ARAFMI NSW. The MHA is a non-government
organisation that provides information, education, and support services,
and conducts mental health promotion campaigns. The MHA also has a
systems advocacy role for mental health issues.
PURPOSE / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position provides research support for an externally funded research
project researching the cannabis use and what general and specific
health campaigns work, or not and why. This project requires the skills
of a Senior Research Officer who has had experience working with people
with a mental illness, independent research experience and some
knowledge of the policy development of drug and alcohol, promotion and
prevention campaigns.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Research Supervisor: Associate Professor Meg Smith
Administrative Supervisor: Gillian Church, CEO, Mental Health
Association
SCOPE:
The Senior Research Officer will be an employee of the UWS and will
report to the CEO of the Mental Health Association, located in East
Sydney, which is the Lead Agency in the Project. Project guidance and
academic supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Meg Smith,
Chief Investigator of the Research Project.
KEY FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
* Independent primary research at the direction of the Research
Project Manager
* Provide leadership, training and day to day supervision to the
Project's Research Assistant (Hew 5).
* Preparation of reports of research findings.
* Coordinate the conducting of focus groups and interviews including
training of other researchers, liaison with Mental Health and Drug and
Alcohol service providers.
* Undertake literature searches and prepare annotated bibliographies
in the area of mental health and drug and alcohol use and prevention
campaigns.
* Qualitative and/or statistical analysis of research data and
reporting on same
* Management and administrative duties; including coordinating
meetings with Research Steering Committee and other research team
members.
* Assist in the preparation of reports to the funding body and the
final report of the research project
* Preparation and co-authorship of journal articles for publication.
* Apply Equal Opportunity and Staff Equity and Affirmative Action

and legislation in all aspects of work.
UWS CONDUCTS ITS OPERATIONS ON A NUMBER OF CAMPUSES AND YOU MAY BE
REQUIRED TO WORK AT AND TRAVEL BETWEEN ANY OF THESE LOCATIONS FROM TIME
TO TIME
SELECTION CRITERIA:
* A relevant degree or equivalent in social science or related
field at Bachelor (Hons) level or above.
* Experience working with young people (18-30) with a mental
illness.
* Knowledge and understanding of relevant policy development in
drug and alcohol prevention.
* Independent Research experience
* Experience in assisting with the design, conduct and analysis
of quantitative and qualitative data.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct focus groups, individual and
telephone interviews with service consumers
* Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others
* Excellent organisational, data management and report writing
skills.
* Demonstrated analytical skills
* Demonstrated ability to prioritise work.
* Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills, with the
ability to deal with a wide range of people and interests, and to work
as a member of a research team.
* Have an understanding and participate in the risk management
processes in accordance with the UWS Risk Management policy.
* A demonstrated understanding of the principles of
anti-discrimination, staff and student equity, occupational health and
safety and other relevant legislation, and the willingness and capacity
to implement equal employment opportunity and occupational health and
safety plans, policies and programs.
