Research Fellow/Fellow (fixed term) Policy and institutional analysisFixed Term until September 2010Academic Level B or CSalary Package: $68,767- $95,977 pa plus 17% superReference No.: CS4682The Fenner School of Environment and Society, a premier interdisciplinary research school, is seeking a motivated researcher to join the research project ‘Sustainable Farms’, an Australian Government Commonwealth Environmental Research Facilities Significant Project.The successful applicant will be engaged in an interdisciplinary, applied and participatory project investigating ecological, socio-economic, policy, institutional and values dimensions of managing rural tree decline in grazing landscapes in central NSW. The work is associated with ongoing scientific research, and aims develop insights into long term policy and management responses to rural tree decline in agricultural landscapes. Rural tree decline is a major but largely unexplored issue in Australian landscapes, and the successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to make significant scholarly and practical contributions.Project descriptionThe research project has the following four components. The successful candidate will have primary carriage of component 2 (policy and institutional aspects) and involvement in component 3. The research will be undertaken in collaboration with landholders and relevant management agencies.Scientific field experiments investigating rural tree decline and regeneration under different grazing management regimes (an existing ARC project led by Dr Joern Fischer). 

Policy and institutional responses to long term rural tree decline and related issues, exploring strategies that can operate over decadal time spans. Review of experience with existing policy approaches, including a historical understanding of landscape management regimes. Assessment of effective mixes of management, policy and institutional approaches to enhance long term tree regeneration in grazing landscapes. 
Participatory engagement with landholders and other stakeholders, using qualitative social research methods such as interviews and participatory workshops to explore multiple values attaching to grazing landscapes and enterprises (including the use of scenarios integrating economic, ecological, social and cultural aspirations). 
Innovative three dimensional visualisation and rendering of future landscape scenarios over decadal time spans and multiple spatial scales using computer modelling, incorporating qualitative and quantitative inputs capturing multiple individual and societal aspirations and driving forces (this component will be undertaken by another member of the project team, who will contribute also to component 3).
