Public Lecture by Dr Kumi Naidoo, 

Secretary General of CIVICUS: World Alliance 

for Citizen Participation, a global network 

of civil society organisations, 

with more than 1000 members in 110 countries,

 

'Civil society - where is it heading? Community organising? Trans-national advocacy? Issues in the debate', hosted by Australian Volunteers International and Victoria University School of Social Sciences

Kumi Naidoo is a well-known public intellectual and activist in South Africa, a veteran of the Anti-apartheid movement since the age of 15 (which included a term in prison) and a Rhodes scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford University in 1989. During the democratic elections in 1994, Kumi was the official spokesperson of the Independent Electoral Commission and directed the training of all electoral staff in the country. 

 

Kumi was founding Executive Director of the South African NGO Coalition (SANGOCO) and in 1999 was appointed Secretary General of the Washington DC based CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. He massively broadened the base of this organization and supervised its transfer to Johannesburg, South Africa. Kofi Anan appointed him to his Eminent Persons Group on UN-Civil Society Relations,

 

Since 2005 Kumi has also chaired GCAP, the Global Call to Action Against Poverty of which the Australian member coalition is 'Make Poverty History'.
