Hi everyone,

For those in Perth - a lecture you may find interesting.

Anne

Julian Burnside QC: Human rights and democracy in Australia

WHEN: Wednesday, 16 May 2007 at 6.30pm

WHERE: Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWA

COST: FREE. All Welcome; No RSVP required.

Julian Burnside is an Australian barrister, human
rights and refugee advocate, and author. He is known for his staunch
opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers. Julian Burnside
gives his time generously to this cause. He has encouraged many in the
legal profession to donate their time to supporting asylum seekers in
the legal process. Together with his wife Kate Durham he is a strong
advocate for the neglected group of asylum seekers detained in Nauru .
Julian and Kate established Spare Rooms for refugees, an initiative
designed to foster practical support for asylum seekers. He has also
provided legal counsel in a wide array of high-profile cases. He was
admitted as Barrister for the state of Victoria in 1972, and appointed a
QC in 1989. In 2004 he was elected as a Living National Treasure.

Every year, the Janine Haines Lecture explores contemporary political
debates as a creative and positive contribution to Australian political
discussion. Above all, it is concerned with creating a future for Australia in which
compassion, sustainability and tolerance are more vigorously advanced
and defended. The lecture is named in memory of Janine Haines, who was
the first woman in Australia to lead a political party. She was the
first of five women to lead the Australian Democrats and the first
Australian Democrat to be elected to the Senate. She died in 2004.
This event is co-sponsored with the Western Australia Democratic Party
and the Don Chipp Foundation.
